Non-communicable diseases (NCD) become the leading cause of death not only in developed countries but also globally, and so in Indonesia. It is already well known some major risk factors of NCD: smoking, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet and alcohol consumption. Among those risk factors, smoking is a big problem in Indonesia, for weak tobacco control policy in the country. Indonesia is among few countries that has not ratify FCTC yet indicates how smoking problem has been neglected.
According to WHO, one important strategy to control NCD is the monitoring and accountability, including monitoring the epidemiologic data of smoking. There are many data collection to support tobacco control such as GTTS, IDHS (Indonesian Demographic and Health Survey or SDKI), BHS (Basic Health Survey or Riskesdas) among many others, but the utilization of those data is minimal. Only few numbers of studies utilized those databases to support tobacco control.
As an opportunity, there is a master degree education to improve the skill to monitor diseases using international standard in Indonesia, called FETP (Field Epidemiology Training Program). The FETP mainly focuses the monitoring project on communicable disease. Besides, in public health field, there is also health promotion and behavior program which focused on the survey of community, especially in qualitative and in-depth data mining. Also, health management and policy, a program in public health department which concerns about health system and needs more support about a good database that will be used for policy development in Indonesia. Therefore, there is a demand to strengthen the students of these three programs to utilize the databases for supporting tobacco control and generate health system improvement for NCD in Indonesia.
Training Objectives
Empower training participants to:
- Gain an understanding of the global tobacco epidemic, the current tobacco control environment in Indonesia, and current evidence-based strategies for tobacco control.
- Introduce the WHO FCTC and MPOWER strategies along with data sources for tracking tobacco use and key policy measures.
- Use data and research to support local tobacco control policy interventions and national public health priorities.
- Write a proposal for a tobacco control and NCDs study.

- Residents from Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Indonesia (students from FETP program, students from health promotion and behavior program, and students from health and policy management program).
- Officers from Republic of Indonesia-Ministry of Health.
